Our Lady of Lourdes & Ferrero Rocher: A Sweet Connection of Faith

Our Lady of Lourdes and the Chocolate Inspired by Her
This week is a wonderful time to celebrate Our Lady of Lourdes, especially as we share chocolates and prayer cards in her honor at our nine retail locations.
But did you know that one of the most famous chocolates in the world—Ferrero Rocher—has a deep connection to the Virgin Mary and her apparitions at Lourdes?
A Sweet Tribute to Lourdes
Ferrero Rocher, the beloved hazelnut chocolate with its golden wrapper, was created in 1979 by Michele Ferrero, a devoted Catholic and the head of the Ferrero chocolate empire. Ferrero chose the name “Rocher” as a tribute to the grotto of Massabielle in Lourdes, where the Virgin Mary appeared to St. Bernadette in 1858. In French, “rocher” means “rock,” reflecting the rugged grotto walls where these miraculous encounters took place.
The distinctive golden foil and textured chocolate shell of Ferrero Rocher could be inspired by the rocky appearance of the grotto itself. This subtle yet meaningful design detail ties the chocolate to a place of prayer, healing, and faith.
A Legacy of Devotion
Michele Ferrero’s dedication to Our Lady of Lourdes extended beyond the name of his chocolates. He organized pilgrimages for his employees and placed an image of Our Lady in every factory and office. He firmly believed that Ferrero’s success was due to her intercession. His devotion was so strong that, before his passing on February 14, 2015, he promised to help with repairs after a flood damaged the Lourdes shrine. Though he passed before he could fulfill this promise, his family honored his wish by making a generous donation to aid in the restoration.
Sharing Faith Through Chocolate
As we reflect on the connection between Ferrero Rocher and Our Lady of Lourdes, we are reminded that even the simplest gestures—like sharing a piece of chocolate—can be an opportunity to share faith. When you enjoy one of these chocolates or gift them to a loved one, take a moment to reflect on the blessings of Our Lady and her enduring message of hope and grace.
This week, as we celebrate both St. Valentine’s Day and the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes, let us be inspired by Michele Ferrero’s devotion and remember the love and protection of Our Blessed Mother.
