La Sartoria Italiana makes three styles of their cassock: Firenze, Roma and Siena. The cut, fit, details and quality are all of identical high quality, but differ in the fabric – and price - to allow our customers to be certain they have the right cassock for them. The opening at the collar of these cassocks is rounded into a distinctive curve for the wearer’s comfort. The collar has an internal stiffener sewn-in to ensure a proper collar appearance for a long time. The Sartori Italiana mini-front cassock Rabbat fits perfectly under this collar, and is of the same distinguished quality as the cassock.
The 15 buttons on the cassock are very special. They are made of molded resin with a cross-hatch pattern on the outside. We have found the rough buttons make them easier to button. Also, the molded resin will stay clean, and not get shiny from wear the way cloth-covered buttons do. Fifteen buttons is just the right amount; any fewer and gaps appear; any more and it takes forever to unbutton!
Both arms on the cassock are fully-cuffed. Each shoulder features a small amount of padding for comfort and to keep the cassock looking straight as it rests on the shoulders. Another great feature of this cassock is the double-stitched pockets that allow the storage of either a small prayer book, keys, wallet or anything of rosary.
A single pleat runs down the back of the cassock to allow a full range of motion during liturgy. Two sturdy stitches help to ensure the cassock has a tidy appearance while worn. No other cassock we sell has a pleat in the back above and below the waist, and a cassock that “gives” more will be a longer-lasting, more comfortable cassock.
On the inside of the cassock, the top half is lined with a rich black satin that is smooth to the touch, and covers any uncomfortable seams. Also inside is a hidden left breast pocket that opens horizontally. It can hold a wallet, mobile phone or passport.
Another detail that impresses us is the durable hem reinforcement found on the bottom of the cassock. The added heft also helps the cassock hang straighter when worn, giving a more stately appearance.
La Sartoria Italiana makes the three cassocks to the same quality standards regardless of the fabric. The three fabrics are of the highest European quality, but each fabric has qualities that the discerning cassock shopper should be aware of.
The Firenze cassock is made of 100% Italian wool. Often, we think of heavy sweaters and winter shirts when we think of wool. This wool is the same type used in designer suits, so it is light, cool and extremely comfortable. The Firenze is the finest of the Sartoria cassocks, and we have found its natural fabric to be the most breathable. Like all wool, it requires more careful care than the other cassocks, but with proper care, it should last for many years. You can order it here!
The Roma cassock is made of a blend of Italian wool and polyester. This fabric is the best of both worlds. The polyester requires little maintenance, and the cool-feeling wool will last a long time. The Siena cassock is the best value of the Sartori cassocks. It is made of 100% polyester, so it is easy to care for. This would be the ideal travel cassock: stuff it in your luggage, and then hang it for a few hours for a proper appearance.
