Saint Nicholas is the true "Santa Claus", his story having evolved over time and tradition to what we know today as the rotund, gift-giving Christmas visitor. The true Saint Nicholas was the Bishop of Myra, a devoted believer and generous man. This statue portrays him in fine detail. He wears a bishop's miter and carries a crozier. The three orbs represent three bags of gold he secretly deposited into the home of a man with three daughters who were in peril of entering prostitution to avoid poverty. Nicholas is the patron saint of children, sailors, merchants, and various cities and countries throughout Europe. His feast day is celebrated on December 6. The richly colored statue is made of resin and stands 10-1/2 inches tall.
